One of the most common questions I hear from travelers in forums or websites is the following... What is better for me? Renting a car or using public transport?

The choice between renting a car or using public transportation and taxis in Cancun depends on your preferences, needs, and the type of experience you want to have during your visit. Here, I share some advantages and disadvantages of using the different modes of transportation available in the city.

Advantages of Renting a Vehicle:

  1. Flexibility and Comfort: Having a car gives you the freedom to explore Cancun at your own pace and on your own schedule. You can visit places outside the tourist routes and enjoy the comfort of having a private vehicle.

  2. Access to Remote Destinations: If you plan to visit places outside the Cancun hotel zone, such as the Mayan ruins of Tulum or the cenotes in the Riviera Maya, having a car will make it easier to access these destinations, as some of them can be difficult to reach by public transport.

  3. Time-Saving: Generally, moving by car can be faster than relying on public transportation, as you won’t have to wait for bus or taxi schedules. This is especially useful if you have a tight itinerary or want to maximize your time in Cancun.

  4. Convenience: You can transport your personal belongings and luggage more easily in a car and won’t have to worry about sharing spaces with other travelers.

Disadvantages of Renting a Car:

  1. Cost: Renting a car in Cancun can be expensive with some agencies, especially during peak seasons. Besides the rental cost, you need to consider fuel and parking. However, Drivey Rent a Car offers excellent prices without needing a credit card to rent a vehicle in Cancun.

  2. Traffic and Parking: The Cancun hotel zone can experience traffic congestion, especially during peak hours. Additionally, finding parking in busy tourist spots can be challenging, with many places charging extra or being somewhat far from the tourist area.

  3. Responsibility and Familiarity with Traffic Laws: If you decide to rent a car, you need to familiarize yourself with the local traffic laws and take responsibility for driving safely. This can be challenging if you are not used to driving in a new place.

If you decide to use public transportation and taxis in Cancun, consider the following:

  1. Public Transport: Cancun has a public bus and combi system that allows you to move economically around the hotel zone and downtown. However, keep in mind that the buses can be crowded and sometimes do not follow a strict schedule, and they do not have air conditioning.

  2. Taxis: Taxis are another option to get around Cancun. However, it is the most expensive option compared to renting a vehicle. If you use a taxi, make sure to use official taxis and try to avoid using them in the hotel zone. There are many buses with more economical fares. You can also agree on the price before getting in. Note that taxis can be more expensive than public transport, especially for longer distances. Uber is an option, but it still lacks proper regulations, which can affect your experience when using one.

In summary, if you value independence, flexibility, and comfort and are willing to invest a larger amount of money, renting a car in Cancun can be a good option.

At Drivey, we have economical units with the benefit of not requiring a credit card deposit and no additional insurance fees. Forget about the fine print... without a doubt, Drivey is an excellent option for renting a vehicle and exploring the Riviera Maya.
